Heat, crowds and Nile water levels all move through the year. Here is how the seasons actually play out.

Egypt has a long, generous season and a short, punishing one. Knowing which is which changes how much of the country you can comfortably see.

Most first-time visitors are told to travel to Egypt in winter and left at that. It is good advice as far as it goes, but it hides a lot of useful detail: Upper Egypt and the Delta behave differently, the shoulder months are better value than their reputation suggests, and a few dates are worth planning around entirely.

What follows is how we actually schedule departures across the year, and what we tell travelers who can only go at a particular time.

October to April: the long season

This is when Egypt is at its most comfortable. Daytime highs in Luxor and Aswan sit in the twenties and low thirties Celsius, and mornings on the west bank are genuinely pleasant rather than something to be endured. Cairo is cooler still, and can be surprisingly chilly after dark in January.

The trade-off is company. Christmas, New Year and the Easter weeks fill the Nile cruisers and the Valley of the Kings well before opening time. If you are travelling then, the single most useful thing your operator can do is get you through the gates early.

May and September: the shoulder

These two months are underrated. Temperatures in Upper Egypt climb, but the sites are quieter, cruise availability is better, and an itinerary weighted toward early starts and long lunches works perfectly well.

September in particular tends to offer winter-quality experiences at shoulder-season prices, with the heat easing noticeably in the second half of the month.

June to August: possible, with adjustments

Summer in Luxor and Aswan is severe, regularly above forty degrees. It is not impossible, but it is a different trip: sites at dawn, a long midday break, and a return in the late afternoon. Some travelers prefer it, because the temples are close to empty.

The Mediterranean coast and Alexandria stay far more temperate, which is why they are the traditional Egyptian summer destination rather than the south.

Dates worth planning around

Ramadan shifts roughly eleven days earlier each year and changes the rhythm of the day, particularly for restaurants and opening hours. It is a rewarding time to visit if you go in knowing what to expect. The Abu Simbel sun festival on 22 February and 22 October fills Aswan hotels months ahead.

If your dates are fixed, tell us at the start. Almost everything can be arranged around a season; very little can be arranged around a bad assumption.
